PMP Certification, Step-by-Step

There are 2 categories:

Category 1 you must have a baccalaureate degree or higher.

You will have to fill out experience verification forms that will document project work in the five processes of project management (initiation, planning, execution, control, and closure). You must have 4,500 “leading and directing” experience within the last 8 years.

Category 2 is if you do not have a baccalaureate degree.

You will have to fill out experience verification forms that will document project work in the five processes of project management (initiation, planning, execution, control, and closure). You must have 7500 hours of project “leading and directing” experience within the last 8 years.

PMI is looking to determine your time “leading and directing” in the areas of project management, NOT necessarily as a “project manager.” PMI cannot verify hour for hour; use integrity and look at the work you have done.

Keep in mind that the app’s Experience Verification Form also requires you to submit contact information – the name and number of a person whom PMI can call directly should they choose to audit your app. PMI will NOT accept your app unless this information is furnished, whether they contact anyone or not.

When you list contact people, courtesy says that you contact them prior to submittal, for both permission and a “heads up.”

There is also a requirement for 35 hours of project management education. With our training you will meet this. If you have other courses that you have taken, this is 35 contact hours.

The cost to take the exam is $555 for non-PMI members and $405 for PMI members. The price differential does NOT cover membership costs, so it’s to your advantage to join either prior to or simultaneous with your exam application. With membership, PMI sends a monthly magazine and a quarterly journal. It is well worth joining and starting to “speak and see” the language of PMI as much as possible.

Once you apply and are approved you can call Prometric Testing Centers or Sylvan Learning centers to get a test date. The test is on the computer. The test is a 4 hour, 200 question multiple choice exam.

The test is achievable but you have to be prepared. Training and understanding the information is important. Getting a handle on what to expect and how questions are worded is why you must get the course in PMP Prep. Practice tests are an excellent source of preparation. Finding out what you don’t know is the key to finding out what you need to study so that you will be well prepared to take the exam.
